My students need a variety of seating options in order to create an engaging environment that will support their diverse needs. Students are more engaged in academic lessons when their bodies are comfortable. I plan to replace five plastic chairs, located by my reading table, for wobble stools. These stools will give students a fresh option during guided-reading. I would also like to incorporate three area rugs to create an environment for independent learning. Flexible seating will allow my students to be comfortable while learning. Some of my students sit or lay on the rug with a clipboard; others sit at their seats to complete their activities or assignments. Making sure students are comfortable is an important component in motivating them. I have seen differences in my student’s behavior or students completing their assignments in a timely manner when they are given a choice in their seating. The wobble stools and area carpets would greatly help the students with different options for movement.
