The majority of my students are Hispanic. Many of them are learning English, and the average reading level for my 8th grade class is 5th grade. The books provided by our school are well above their reading level, and they are all written by white authors with white main characters. Because of this, most of my students have given up on reading. The stories are too hard, and the characters are not relate-able. I would LOVE to teach a book that my kids can understand and relate to. This book by Gary Soto is perfect, because the main character is them. Gary Soto is a Hispanic author who writes about Mexican kids growing up in America. He writes about kids who have tough backgrounds and are trying to fit in and find their place. He talks about being torn between the Hispanic culture and the American culture. We have read Gary Soto's short stories that are available online, and my students light up. They get it, and they beg to read more. I would love to have this class set of books so I can do a whole unit on a book about kids like them, written by a man who used to be them. "Sparrow Hawk Red" is a book that also talks about a Hispanic teenager from a rough background. It talks about overcoming obstacles and dealing with consequences of choices. My plan is to do a book study with both of these books, and specifically focus on comparing how both characters deal with hardship.
