We all need spaces to take a break from the demands and stress of our lives and kindergartners are no different! The materials I'm requesting for this project will help me to create a corner of the classroom where students can go to take a break from an activity that may be stressful, to process a big feeling, or to escape stimuli that may be overwhelming. Rather than leaving the space empty I am carefully selecting materials to put in the corner that will help students that may need an outlet to get their bodies and minds calm and that have academic value.
Each material I am requesting has a function!
Double-Sided Write & Wipe Magnetic Room Divider: The room divider will act as a wall creating a space that is separate from the rest of the classroom and outside stimulation. By using a corner and the room divider we can create a space that students can easily put themselves in to get some privacy from peers but that adults can easily monitor and enter when students are ready to process. The reverse side of the room divider also has a white board for daily use.
Carpet: The carpet helps to make the space cozy and allows the students to safely sit on the floor if they choose. Students will have access to a bean bag chair. It sounds small but having a carpet to sit on makes a big difference and helps to create the feeling of a well loved, well cared for space.
Magnet Letters/ Markers/ Marker Holders: These materials will be accessible to students as soon as they enter the space and will be presented as tools to get their bodies ready to learn.
