My middle school ELLs bring a wealth of culture and inquiry into our class. They come from economically disadvantaged households, and they are all learning English as a new language. They are eager to learn, study, and utilize the resources we have at school. Their commitment to learning is phenomenal, which is reassuring since they do not have access to the same tools at home. In my class, I facilitate small groups of student-centered learning. We have a great group of dedicated teachers and administrators in our school building. However, the community struggles financially, and we face many cut backs. Cut backs impact the resources we receive and incorporate into daily teaching models. Research shows that education is a way out of poverty, and I want to ensure my students have the skills and opportunities that they yearn for and deserve. I want them to be successful citizens in our global community, who break the cycle of poverty.
