I would love to add technology to the classroom through the use of iPads. As children of low income families, my students are born at an extreme disadvantage. Language and literacy are tied to income and by the age of 3 there is a 30 million word gap between between children of low income families and their wealthier counterparts. I plan on helping to close this 30 million vocabulary word gap by using a multitude of educational apps via Apple iPads. The majority of my students were not born fortunate enough to have a safe and consistent home life. As children of single parent homes, many have never had the luxury of technology at home. This is highly unfortunate, as I believe that a simple tablet can open the world to a small child who has never had the benefit of family vacations, trips to the museum, or even just a mother to them read bedtime stories. I plan on enriching the literacy block in my classroom by using our classroom iPads as a listening listening center, as well as addressing a wide range of phonological and phonics skills with educational apps. By supplementing my current and language and literacy program with the use of educational technology, I am confident that I can close the achievement gap between my students and their high income peers.
