I see students from ages 5-11, and when I have a full schedule typically around 120 come in and out of my classroom daily. I see students with IEP’s and/or 504 plans in mainstream classrooms as well as a small class for students with multiple social, emotional, and learning needs. My current classroom chairs are adequate for most, but don’t fit the needs of others. I see each class once a week (some classes twice), so a student that may need alternative seating to focus may be missing out on a lot of material covered in the one music class they get a week. The goal is to have wobble chairs, yoga mats, and a balance ball for the students that need them so they can expend some of their extra energy and be able to focus on the material being taught in music class. Some of these same students thrive with (or simply need) alternative seating in their regular classrooms, so there is no reason why they shouldn’t be allowed that same opportunity in the music classroom.
