Everyone deserves to have the sustenance to be able to think to their best ability, make level-headed decisions, and stay alert. Just as importantly, when we have snacks available to students, it sends a message that we care. For example, a student who felt nervous sharing with me about a friend's depression warmed up after he was able to share some cookies and build rapport with me. Giving students the essentials they need, like snacks, builds trust and rapport. As a social worker, a student's option to ask simply ask for a granola bar can be a softer entry into a deeper conversation. It builds relationships.
