Although all of my students are the same age, they are a diverse group of readers in their levels, ranging from second to sixth grade. Many students today are unmotivated to read. They are inundated with technology and don't see the value or fun in picking up a book. Many of them lack reading role-models in their lives. Our school provides wonderful learning opportunities for kids, and tools for learning online, but our selection of up to date books is lacking. I have recently changed grade levels within my school, and now find myself with a very small, and underwhelming classroom library. Students need high interest books to get them reading. Fifth graders in our community enjoy Wonder, Harry Potter and Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. These books are quickly snatched up at the library. Classrooms full of books drive students to read more. Currently, my classroom is full of old textbooks, paper booklets printed off Reading A-Z, and outdated novels handed down from retired teachers. I want to surround my students with enticing materials that they will find irresistible. With my passion for teaching reading, coupled with award winning novels, my students will excel in literacy. Students who read more are more successful in other subject areas. Reading is fundamental to learning. Common Core standards require students to read with rigor in Math and Science. The key to achieve this level of comprehension is to start with books that draw them in.
