As a Title I school, we recognize the power of literacy in our students lives. However, with so many of our families living in poverty, books are a luxury few can afford. This makes the school library an essential element in our students' success. We function on the belief that every student deserves access to stories they choose, ones that inspire and encourage. Unfortunately, we also function with no budget whatsoever. As a result, as much-loved series disintegrate, we continue checking them out, carefully bound in rubber bands, and we keep a wish-list of books we hope to buy one day. This isn't just about getting books into the hands of our current students, it's about maintaining a library for next year's students and all the students to come.
