What happens when reluctant readers experience stories and authors that represent their culture and identity? They read! Last year my 6th graders were fortunate enough to see Kwame Alexander speak and receive a copy of his latest book Rebound. I could hardly believe the transformation. So many of my reluctant readers became interested in reading. It was truly inspiring. And why the transformation? We had an honest conversation about race and literature. Soon they were all looking for authors and stories that represented their life experiences. Some wanted to find authors with skin the same color as theirs. Others looking for stories of characters with disabilities and troubles that they could relate to. Quickly my students had found new reasons to read. This year I am moving to 4th grade and need your help to give my classroom library a boost. I am hoping to restock my library with as many stories and authors as diverse as my learners. In addition to representing the cultural diversity of my students, I am including many popular titles in Spanish so I can try to reach the students in my class who have emerging English skills but are literate in Spanish. Your support of the readers in our classroom is greatly appreciated!
