The student body of our school is an extremely unique group. Our school is a historically black high school, with students coming from the surrounding area and up to 25 miles away. While the many hardships (living below the poverty-line or in low-income housing, single parent homes and minimal public transportation) could be used as a crutch or an excuse, our students use it as a source of strength and perspective to where they are going. This year alone, our students have had to overcome severe flooding and emergency evacuations in their neighborhoods, brought on by Hurricane Irma. Both the students and I are proud to be at Burke and are committed to show everyone in Charleston what a great school Burke is and what great students we have here.
