My students need a rug, two bean bag chairs, various throw pillows and essential oils with a diffuser to create a lounge area where students can go to when they are feeling emotionally overwhelmed. As an educator it is my job to provide a learning environment that is supportive to my students and all of their needs. This means that I need to support my students educationally as well as emotionally. The students in my classroom are struggling emotionally. They are facing emotionally challenging issues inside and outside of the classroom on a daily basis. My students do not always know how to express their emotions. This is why I have decided to create an emotional safe space in my classroom. I want this safe space to be a comfortable area where the students can go to relax, think about and process how they are feeling. I want this area to be a space where they can go if they need a few minutes alone or if they need a space to go to talk to a friend or teacher about how they are feeling. I have chosen a rug, bean bags and throw pillows to help create a comfy lounge area where my students can go to be alone or with a friend or teacher. I have chosen lavender oil as it is very calming. I have chosen an oil diffuser to help diffuse the lavender oil. It is my hope that the rug, pillows, bean bags and oil/oil diffuser create a very welcoming and safe place where the students can talk about how they are feeling and process how they are feeling.
