My students need diverse books that have characters that look like them, books that share new places and heroes, and books that help them to grow in their social and emotional competency. By having access to diverse fiction and non-fiction books my students will grow as life-long readers and build healthy relationships with their classmates along the way. My students will also have access to high interest books that utilize their high frequency words, which will give them confidence as readers. It is important for my students to see themselves reflected in the stories that they read, and connect text to self to find deeper meaning. With the successful funding of this project my students will find enjoyment in reading stories that make them laugh from the Elephant and Piggie series, and open themselves up to a world of possibility with books like Sulwe, Sofia Valdez, Future Prez.
