As a teacher of U.S. History, I strive to find ways to personally connect my lessons to the students' lives. These materials (seeds, tools, soil, etc.) will allow my students to plant their own victory gardens for our lessons on World Wars I and II. The lesson will not only allow the students a hands-on project, but it will also incorporate math and science as we measure and chart the growth of the seedlings. By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase my students' attention to and focus on the history lesson at the heart of the project, but you will also help them to gain a life skill that can be carried into their adult lives as well. As my students watch the plants grow from seeds into seedlings and then into plants, they will gain an understanding of the importance of growing your own food during times of food shortages (for example, during the world wars) as well as the personal health and financial benefits that vegetable gardens can provide. When the plants are ready to be transplanted to an outdoor area, other students in our school, from kindergarten through twelfth grade, will benefit from the project as well since the garden will be centrally located and open to all students.
