As the education specialist in a small, rural, TK-12 charter school, I find it remarkable how much students need to move their bodies in order to access their education. Whether a Kindergarten student is standing behind his desk swaying side to side as he colors his picture or a senior constantly leaning back in her classroom chair, every grade has at least one student who needs to move his body in order to learn. The sensory needs for physical motion extend to many students, not just students with autism. In my professional capacity, it is easy to see how having flexible seating will provide input that students need while maintaining safe behaviors. The senior doesn't run the risk of head trauma in case her chair slips while she is leaning back. A third grader who struggled to stay seated can use a standing desk and still receive his lessons. Flexible seating is all about removing barrier to learning. In a community impacted by disasters, poverty and COVID, our learners need us to remove the barriers that we can.
