At our school, a part of every day is set aside for community meeting, a time for students to form a circle, pass around a talking stick, and share and listen to one another. The practice of community circle is based on Restorative Justice practices. This process develops empathy and trust in the classroom. It aids with classroom management. When students feel safe in the classroom, they are happy and the basic need of belonging is met. Once this happens, learning can take place on a deeper level. A carpet is a place where students can comfortably gather to share and listen to each other. Being able to form a circle on the floor is how my students will be able to create a classroom community. My hope is the all students will begin day one of third grade with introductions and continue throughout the year building strong relationships with classmates and staff at our school.
