Danebo is made up of a diverse community of learners in grades kindergarten through 5th grade. My students are quite fortunate to receive 90 minutes of music per week. My music program uses both choral singing and instruments (including xylophones, recorders, ukuleles, djembes and other African hand drums) to learn musical elements and work toward performances. Most of our students come from low-income households and do not have opportunities to take private music lessons. In my 15+ years of teaching, I have taught as a reading specialist and a special education teacher in low-income schools. I have seen how music enhances students' learning in other subjects by improving memory, practicing foundational reading skills, developing social-emotional skills, and providing creative outlets. Now, as a music teacher, I get to provide music education to students who would not have the opportunity outside of school.
