My school is a Charter School in Southeast San Diego. We are a conversion Charter, which means we were a district school that became a charter due to low performance. I worked at our school before we became a charter and so I am aware of the positive changes that have taken place. Our school is located within a low socioeconomic area and consist mostly of Latino, African American and Asian. All of our students are considered Title I and receive free lunch. Prior to becoming a charter school, about 8 years ago, our school suffered from low test scores, high teacher and administrative turn-over rate, poor student discipline and low expectations. Now that we are a Charter we have implemented a positive school-wide culture of learning and the teachers are truly invested in the success of all students. We have also added electives, which is where is I come in as the Art Teacher. My students love art and for many of them it is there favorite class.
