I teach all of the instrumental music students grades five through twelve in my district. The Elementary Band is comprised of fifth grade, Junior Band is comprised of 6 & 7, and Senior Band is comprised of grades 8-12. The Marching Band, which is comprised of students grades seven through twelve, participate in three parades and Memorial Day Services each May. My students interest in Jazz prompted the re-establishment of our Jazz Band in the fall of 2015. The program has been under my direction for the last five years and has grown from 42 musicians up to 104! I work in a very small, rural school district in upstate NY. We don't have an auditorium; we have a tiny stage housed in the cafeteria, which also serves as a gymnasium for after school sports. My rehearsal space is housed on the stage this is swiftly becoming too small for us all! Lessons are taught in a very small band room adjacent to the cafeteria.
