My students are eager learners, pushing their limits and expanding the boarders of what they know-they just happen to be blind. They use techniques and devices to supplement for their vision loss. They can't see the print, so their use their fingers to read braille. They can't see the ground, so they use a cane to help them travel. They can't see maps to get directions, so we teach them how to use devices to give them auditory directions. My students are blind, but they don't give up. They know anything their sighted peers can do, they can do. As students in Chicago, my students have a the great opportunity to take advantage of the public transit and walker-friendly nature of the city.
