It is one thing to watch a child create, but it is an honor to be part of their process. In my classroom, a voice is given to the student who is non-verbal so that they can express themselves. Materials are adapted so the student who is unable to grasp a paintbrush can create their own brushstrokes on their art. Choices are given, not only for independence, but because we respect our students as individuals. We give recognition to each individual for what they can do, by not letting their disability be a limitation. Creativity is limitless! I want our students to learn about photography. The camera will have multiple uses in our classroom and around our school. Besides using the camera to capture our students in events such as Special Olympics, the students will learn how to use a tripod and a camera to photograph their artwork to display digitally on our website. The Wifi option on the camera allows for our students who have difficulty with fine motor skills to access the shutter release using an iPad. We use switches daily to turn on devices, to communicate, to manipulate a toy- why not a camera? One major project will be using the materials to make a stop motion animation video. Exposure to still photography, stop motion animation and video gives our students the opportunity to take their creativity to a new level with just one click!
