My students are mostly all non-verbal, non-readers. My students are the type that I often get asked "What do you teach them?" as if they aren't able to learn what other students can. My students have difficulty expressing what they know in a traditional sense, but that does not mean they are not learning and it does not mean they do not deserve a well-rounded education. Their abilities vary as much as their personalities. One can copy basic sentences and say simple phrases while another is blind and we are working on saying words relevant to the learning occurring. I have one student who is all smiles all day and another young lady who, though she doesn't talk, is able to convey every ounce of typical teenage angst in one well-timed eye roll. My students are wonderful young men and women who hunger for learning and experiences just as much as every other child. It just takes a little extra effort and love to see that hunger, and to watch them grow!
