Our magnet school serves students from every corner of Durham, North Carolina, and offers a unique opportunity for students to attend college classes during their high school years. This is a financially empowering opportunity, as many students are first generation college students living below the poverty line. However, our students do not have access to the same materials students at a typical high school are accustomed to. For example, we don't have a library or media center, and our students are in great need of gaining access to the rigorous texts that will prepare them for college classes. Our students are incredibly dedicated, and they embrace challenges, particularly when analyzing a difficult text. They are often inspired to ask courageous questions about a text by examining social inequities and other subtle cues buried within a text.
