I am an Essential Skills teacher in the Kansas City Missouri Public School District. I work with Special Needs students in grades 7-12 in a self-contained classroom setting. The classroom goal is for my special needs adolescents to gain independent functioning in the areas that most of us take for granted. The range of skills in the classroom vary from complete non-readers, to students who can read well enough to have jobs that require minimal reading skills some day. My goal is to get them all ready for life after high school, whether it is in a sheltered workshop setting, or at a local grocery store. Everyone deserves an education that prepares them for life after high school!
