Conceptual math is hard to teach, but essential for deeper mathematical understanding in the upper grades. I believe deep understanding begins in kindergarten and builds every year. Last year, my students had strong results on their year end math assessment because of exposure to daily story problems. My students need access to UNIFIX cubes for our daily story problem. They will represent their thinking using the cubes. The geometric shapes and clock are other resources essential for conceptual understanding. I plan to up the rigor further by providing access to hands-on math every day. My scholars will learn from daily experience in a structured and joyful format. Each day, several mathematicians will come up to the front of the classroom to share their strategies with their classmates in order to promote ownership over their learning.
