My students live in one of the state's most impoverished cities. They come to school every day despite the violence they experience in their community. Many of my students come to school either sleep or food deprived. Unfortunately high school students throughout the country are often sleep deprived. This, as well as their lack of nutritional food results in many of them performing poorly in many of their classes. My school is made up of 100% of minority students with 60% African Americans and 40% Latino. While many of them have cell phones that is the limit of their technology. In fact today's students use their thumbs to write texts and so without keyboards they are unable to use computers effectively. Their limited exposure to technology has greatly disadvantaged my students when it come to the PARCC standardized tests that they are now required to take. This lack will also cause them to fall behind other students in more affluent districts.
