I have been teaching special education for 29 years. I currently teach a cross-categorical class of 2nd - 5th graders. My students have various challenges and disabilities. I strive to prepare my students to succeed in life beyond the classroom. Academics are the focus but we also work on daily living and social skills. My district is a large urban district with high levels of disadvantaged and minority students. They often do not have basic supplies such as pencils and crayons available in the home. Access to technology is often not available to them outside of school. This makes it challenging to give them the resources they will need to succeed in the future.
