Music teachers across the globe have been coming up with new and innovative ways to teach music during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Choir teachers, like myself, have had to build the plane while flying it when it comes to singing inside the classroom. All teachers are facing an uphill battle to try and get student learning back to the place it was in before the pandemic began. Some of the creative ways to engage students in learning to read music is to use instruments that are fun, familiar, and enjoyable, cue the Ukuleles! They are the perfect way to introduce basic music theory while having a blast learning an instrument. Students will engage more freely when fun is involved and because the ukulele is fairly simple to learn with a high success rate, students will be more willing to continue to learn and grow in their musical endeavors. Ukuleles are also small and easy to handle, making it an ideal companion for the middle school vocal music classroom. By utilizing ukuleles inside the vocal music classroom, I hope to grow our choir program, help students engage with music on a completely new and exciting level, and encourage student growth with the addition of "Strummin' and Hummin'".
