As budding scientists, my kids have been told to look at the big idea of science. A lot of the kids in our school are underprivileged, and are unable to understand why we can't use more technology at school, and if they are allowed to use it they can't figure out how to Google a question, in 8th grade! With MCAS 2.0 coming to our school, the science fair being implemented in each grade and textbooks moving online, it seems like EVERYTHING is moving online rather too quickly for these kiddos. Finding time to get all 90 kids to the computer lab in one day can be exhausting! Much less teaching them how to use each website over and over, they might get to the curriculum in a few months! Being able to give my students an iPad during class so they can either research something for their science fair project, practice for the MCAS online, or simply having the ability to complete their homework (which is online!) without feeling stressed about being able to find a computer to use when they get home. The big picture is this: Technology is taking over our kid's lives, and they struggle to properly use it.
