We are a rural school in South Carolina. I teach all juniors and seniors in high school who have not had much experience with self directed learning. The majority do not attend a 4 year school but opt to attend community college or go straight to work. They find the task of discovery and learning a mystery unless they have a complete set of instructions and things to memorize. I have the pleasure and frustration to lead them on their journey in the microscopic world of "nasty" pond water. As they discover the beauty of the hidden microscopic world they realize just how much it is like the world they know. We create beautiful artistic images from their microscope as they learn how to balance the delicate biotic and abiotic factors they control in their ecosystems. My school wants the students to broaden their horizons and has allowed us to create a STEAM academy where we can focus on self directed learning and the incorporation of art into the STEM curriculum.
