My students are the most caring, empathetic and yet misunderstood children. From no fault of their own, they have seen more in their young lives than a lot of people see in their lifetimes. These trauma backgrounds have prohibited the students from learning healthy coping skills. External stimuli can be overwhelming and will interfere with social interactions as well as academics. These students have learned to isolate themselves in order to deescalate and be able to process when calmed. They also need quiet areas free from distractions to concentrate. They are survivors and yearn for love and attention.
