My students read independently for ten minutes in class each day. The biggest challenge I face right now is having enough of the right books to put in the hands of my students. We're three months into school and several of my students have read 5-10 books already, and a few special books have generated a word-of-mouth waiting list of eager freshman. But many students haven't found an author or subject they connect with... yet! I'm looking forward to introducing authors like Walter Dean Myers for students who love sports and books like To All the Boys I've Ever Loved to sway students to turn from Netflix to reading. With your help, many ninth graders will develop a lifelong understanding of the power of words and stories in our lives.
