According to the research of Donalyn Miller, The Book Whisperer, people who lose the ability to make choices become disempowered. My project aims to empower my students. It's extremely valuable for students to choose their own reading material most of the time, but in addition to that they need exposure to a book landslide so that they can begin to determine what books they like and learn how to choose their own books. Access when combined with choice means that the books offered are varied and accessible – that ALL students can find a book they are capable of reading, but that is also engaging and compelling. Recognizing that some of our students may read below or above grade level, we must provide books in a range of reading levels so all students can select books they can understand and enjoy.
