My 160 sixth graders come from several elementary schools on the island. Not all schools have computers available, and most, including those who have worked on computers before middle school, have not learned to type. Based on their experience with handheld devices, some aren't convinced of the need for proper typing. For others it is still challenging to log on to the computer with their own Gmail accounts and get into our typing or reading programs. One thing they all have in common is a desire to work on something that is meaningful to them. There are many who enjoy expressing themselves by drawing, while others take pride in their writing. Some enjoy working on the computer, while others prefer paper. As they get the hang of typing and gain more computer skills, they will have opportunities to express that individuality.
