A high percentage of my students are of part Hawaiian ancestry. My class of 24 students biggest challenge is having experiences with which learning about science, character traits and sustainability become real through "hands on" experiences through a traditional method of Hawaiian farming (lo'i). Taking our students out from the walls of the school and allowing field trips to Hawaiian farms and cultural fish ponds to connect to their cultural background provides students a way to connect and grow in pride about who they are, where they come from and whom they can become through active learning outside of the box.
