Like many educators, having to personally supply and fund our individual classrooms for the success of our kiddos is a no brainer; special education in particular is well special for many reasons, but especially because my kiddos require multi-modal and often times "basic" necessities like snap together letter blocks, magnetic mazes and puzzles, and jumbo building blocks for sensory time in the morning following long bus rides in order to self-regulate and be ready for learning in the school day. Educational games that promote phonics, reading, and math as in the Zingo Word Builder game, the math counters, and Roll and Read Phonics Games, but in engaging ways allow my kiddos who struggle with self-regulation and emotional self-esteem to have fun and learn at the same time. Bringing the Life Cycle Posters to encourage exploration of science elements will bring the nature side of things more real inside the classroom setting for my kiddos where the Calendar Math Center allows "real life" math concepts to be learned like counting the days in a week, in a month, manipulating money, and creating math problems relating to the amount of school days. Learning for all students should be fun, encourage exploration, and spark curiosity. Technology in any classroom is a must. Not all districts are willing or open to providing special education with computers or iPads, thus special ed when it comes to technology are left in the dust or teachers are left to use their person technology items in the classroom for student use. Gaining an iPad for students to watch self-regulation videos or play educational apps would be life changing for many who do not have that kind of access at home. Receiving the opportunity to graciously accept these materials would more than beneficial to kiddos who truly deserve it.
