My students have amazing imaginations that allow them to experience the world on their terms. Separately, they are diverse learners with varying needs and abilities. Together, they are fun, energetic, and full of surprises. Although they live in a low-socioeconomic community with few resources, they are proud of who they are and the families they belong to. They love sharing stories about their experiences and enjoy making connections to what they know and what they are learning. My students struggle academically and/or behaviorally, yet most of them come to school each day excited about learning and growing. What I most enjoy about my students is their determination. For the most part, they are hard workers. The majority have poor foundation skills and are 2 or more grades below where they should be; yet they don't give up. In fact, they have learned to encourage each other with a kind word or offer of help.
