My 6th graders are an amazing, diverse group of learners that come from varying demographics and backgrounds. The majority of my students are children of migrant workers and those who live well below the poverty level. This year with the implementation of 1:1 technology, they are diving head first into our 21st Century classroom with eagerness, excitement and enthusiasm. They have proven to be quick learners, have embraced our technology based programs, and have become master docs, slides, forms, and spreadsheet creators and navigators. However, the attempt to bring them into the 21st century classroom is proving to be difficult seeing as most students are of low income households and the majority still lack basic necessities. One of those necessities being traditional school supplies. At the start of the year, most students come to school with little or no school supplies and the ones that do have them run out quick. Students then look to me for those supplies.
