The Next Generation Science Standards asks students to observe and explain phenomena on a continuous basis. These students need to have the skills to create models that explain scientific phenomena. They also need to have the skills to analyze scientific phenomena and apply science practices that support their explanations of this phenomena. Students who do not have the use of technology to apply science practices are being left out. This environment does not encourage students who are often out due to repeated absences or suspensions. It gives them even less reason to be in the classroom. Having the use of this technology of Chromebooks will help these at risk students by giving them a good reason to be here. When these students, with high absentee rates of 85% or more, feel they are needed and are a component of the classroom they will be here more often. This technology will also help these students get closer to the experience of analyzing data. It will allow groups of students to be smaller. When students are organized into large groups, disengaged students will tune out more quickly. Giving these students responsibilities and an opportunity to be more involved will help to re-engage them. Having smaller groups helps make this happen. It helps them realize they are not being left out.
