As we enter a new common core era students are required to complete assignments and master technological skills that will prepare them for the 21st Century. This common core initiative requires students to use computers, but does not provide the means to make those computers available to them. We are in a district of two schools that only have one computer lab available to all the students in the school. Students in my class are able to attend the computer lab one time a week. In my classroom I only have one very old computer that takes a long time to process any command. My Special Education students require extra time to complete their assignments and are not able to do it in the forty five minutes a week that is provided to them in the computer lab. Having access to computers in the special education classroom will allow my student extra time to complete their work, but also an opportunity to be provided with academic support at their own pace. Furthermore, having access to computers in the special education classroom will give my students an opportunity to use the computers for research, reduce the stress of being rushed at the computer lab and participate in a more enjoyable reward system at the end of the week.
