This is my 5th year teaching preschool in the Head Start Program. The range of ages in my room is 3-5 years old. I taught Kindergarten for many years, but what I found missing was the time for children to interact through play. Academics were the key and the time for social/emotional skills to be practiced through play were taken away. Head Start is a play-based program that uses the Conscious Discipline model with our students. We identify feelings and recognize them. We practice breathing to help regulate behaviors. We wish our friends well when they are not in school and recognize that they were missed when they returned. If I can help my students recognize how they are feeling and model strategies to regulate themselves, I will know I was successful.
