I love to read and it occurred to me that I never read in a straight back traditional chair, so why ask my kindergarten students to? As I am building the foundation for the love of school, I want children to be able to choose where they sit to enjoy a good book, collaborate with their peers, and work on their reading strategies. Allowing students to choose where they sit and what they sit on, creates a positive environment empowering them to take ownership of their learning. Some of the options will be stability balls, bean bag chairs and wobble seats. Children who are expected to remain seated without moving have been found to lead to inattention and disruptive behavior. Alternate seating allows students to move while learning which improves attention. Creating a learning environment that is inviting and engaging is crucial. With alternate seating, my students will have more opportunities to communicate with their peers while working collaboratively. I want to create a hands-on, engaging classroom where children can choose to sit where they learn best. My goal is to heighten the learning in my classroom to meet all students’ needs.
