Ask any of my students what their favorite part of a school day is, and most likely the answer will be free time! This is a time for them to choose a "play" station around the room, relax with their friends and... keep doing more work?? Yes! While they think they are just having fun playing games, I know they are actually speeding up their math fluency, increasing their decoding abilities, reviewing vocabulary words and improving their logic and critical thinking skills. I accomplish this by sneaking standards-based activities into "game stations" and reward my students by allowing them to "play". Trust me, it works every time :)
