Rekenreks are math tools that help us see number relationships. They are arranged in lines of ten movable beads. Often the beads are two different colors, so each line of ten can easily also be seen as 5 and 5. They are easy to use, with no small loose pieces. These Rekenreks will be used throughout the year in many ways. They are an extremely effective tool for building number sense. We will use the 2 line (20 beads) Rekenreks at the beginning of the year to explore ways to make 10, as well as ways to make other one-digit numbers. As the year continues, we will explore double-digit numbers. Eventually we will use the 10 row (100 beads) Rekenrek to help us explore place-value. A strong sense of place value is the foundation for many math skills in future years.
