Years after our state made the shift to the common core state standards, our district is still using outdated math curriculum, with no immediate plans for a new curriculum adoption. These books will move our classroom into the current decade! We are currently using the previous series of these books, so many of the lessons and overall structure will be the same. But, instead of adding in disjointed and poorly written supplement materials, all the content we need will be in one place. The Core Connections Algebra books emphasize group work and discovery. Students are gently guided though tough topics like factoring quadratics, curve fitting exponential functions, and writing recursive rules for sequences. Extension activities are included in most lessons, so even my most capable students will always have a challenge. The curriculum is teacher friendly too--review of prior topics is wrapped into the daily lessons, and engaging activities (not just repetitive practice) take up most of the class time. Students often work in groups, but they are accountable for their own understanding too. Students will each have their own e-book for homework and studying, and I will have as many hard copies of the textbook as possible in my own classroom. If I have at least one for every group of 4, that will be a good start. I plan on buying 5 using personal and school funds, and if I can get another 3 from donorschoose, then I'll have enough for each table group to have one. These books will provide the rigor and cohesion my students crave.
