Last year, my students created a charity, "The SPIRIT Cares" project. We discuss real-life problems in our community and search for solutions in an effort to make our community a better place for everyone. This year, students discovered that our local animal shelter is overpopulated with homeless animals and thus are having to turn away some strays. We discussed the issue as a class and decided on a plan of action to help solve the problem. Students decided to publish a monthly article in our local newspaper called "SPIRIT's Pet-of-the-Month." Students plan-of-action consists of building awareness for our local animal shelter by using iPads to upload pictures of homeless animals and publish articles featuring the animals in hopes that someone from our community will adopt them. The student generated articles will be e-mailed to our local newspaper editor who has already agreed to publish one article each month free of charge! The iPads will provide portable technology that will assist us in this project as well as other endeavors that require the use of technology outside the classroom. The SPIRIT Cares Project is on-going and evolves each year with the interests of the students. It was designed to promote good citizenship while utilizing real-life problem solving skills. I strive to empower my students to better their communities by discovering their voice and helping them to realize that they can make a difference.
