I teach a special needs group of 22 students in Reading, Writing, and Math. Most come from low income households and are immigrants from other countries. Our school is a Title 1 school which has 90% or more students on free or reduced lunch. My classroom is a combination of organized chaos, mixed with absolute dysfunction that somehow manages to come together and works. It's a safe haven for my students who need to get away from settings that make them uncomfortable, unwanted, and isolated. Being a Special Education teacher is about more than just helping students to process academics, it's about giving them the independence to learn and interpret their surroundings in a way they can easily understand. My kids may be labeled "Special Needs" but they are just like anyone else. They make me laugh, and I love what I do every day. It's me that is lucky, not them.
