My students are a great bunch that put a smile on my face the minute I see them walk in the room. They are funny, sweet, and even mischievous at times. Unfortunately, the majority of my students are also 2-3 reading levels below where they should be. This is detrimental to their self-esteem and it is turning them away from reading. Most of my students are aware that they have fallen behind in reading and feel a certain shame because of this. Though my students may not like reading out loud, I have seen that they like checking out books from the classroom library. My school is in a high poverty area and sadly we lack some resources. Earlier this school year I had to reach out to family and friends to create my own classroom library. I was very lucky to get enough books donated to my classroom and see that my students have benefited from this.
