I teach kindergarten in a rural middle Georgia school. The majority of our students receive free or reduced lunches and all students receive free breakfast and snacks daily. I have 21 students in my class and all of them are eager learners who prefer to be actively moving while learning rather than sitting still. Our class has only a fifteen minute recess built into the daily schedule to get those wiggles out! We, also, only have 2 45 minutes P.E. classes per week which translates to not near enough movement time for active 5 year olds! The students are required to master 90% of 43 reading standards for promotion at the end of the year. Allowing them to be active learners is critical for them in being able to master these standards and develop the love of learning that a 5 year old needs to be a lifelong learner.
