Our elementary school is located in the southern part of Houston, Texas which was heavily impacted by Hurricane Harvey 4 weeks ago. We serve almost 550 Prekindergarten - 4th grade students. The majority of our students come from low income families as 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. I am the school counselor so I work with all 550 of our students and their families. My main job is to support our students as they deal with a variety of issues and problems. I teach students self regulation and calming strategies so that they will have the tools they need to manage any crisis that they experience. This has been especially important as our students our dealing with the aftermath of Harvey and the loss of their homes and personal belongs. I also work with students on improving their social skills and working to get along with others.
